Hyaluronic acid is a vital naturally-occurring substance that’s part of the skin’s youth-supporting matrix and helps keep skin stable, safeguarded, and constantly renewed. Hyaluronic acid is also a humectant, a category of hygroscopic skincare ingredients, meaning they draw moisture from their surroundings. Humectants are often found in water-based moisturizers, serums, and other leave-on skincare products because they help boost hydration for all skin types, which is especially beneficial for dry, dehydrated skin.
There are several types of Hyaluronic acid based on molecular weight referred to as Daltons. This type is ULMW ultra-low molecular weight which is the smallest molecule and has the best ability to penetrate the skin. ULMW bonds to collagen on one side and a water molecule on the other, plumping the skin, reducing fine lines, and hydrating the skin. It has been shown to attenuate the inflammatory response and promote regenerative healing. Low molecular weight penetrates the skin and does not gel like the HMW-Hyaluronic acid, so it can be used at up to 10% without changing the mixture's viscosity. High molecular weight can only be mixed at 1% because of the gelling effect. ULMW is often combined with HMW to get each hyaluronic acid's penetration and barrier effects.
